Labeling and Formatting of Supporting Information Files

Please follow the instructions below regarding the naming and formatting of supporting information files and components within those files. Doing so will speed time to publication, avoid errors, and help the reader locate the information you provide.

Labeling of Supporting Information Files

  • Choose filenames for your supporting information that contain S1, S2, etc., to label your various supporting information files in an orderly, clear manner. Note that “Supporting Information S1”, “Supporting Information S2”, etc. is the preferred naming convention for JIE supporting information files. Please note that the publisher changes the filenames of supporting information files before posting them on their website so it is important that mentions of the supporting information use JIE-formatted labels such as “Supporting Information S1” and not the filenames that were given to the files when they were submitted.
  • For a supporting information file in Microsoft Word format, use the following naming conventions for the file’s various components: Section S1, S2, etc.; Table S1, S2, etc.; Figure S1, S2, etc.; and Appendix S1, S2, etc.
  • For a supporting information file in Microsoft Excel format, use descriptive labels on tabs in conjunction with headers at the top of individual sheets to identify the various contents.
  • Ensure that all mentions of supporting information in your main manuscript are clear, and accurately match the labeling of your supporting information files and components (e.g., “…in Supporting Information S1,” “…see Table S1 of Supporting Information S2,” etc.).

Formatting of Supporting Information Files

  • Use the JIE supporting information templates (found at http://jie.click/templates) to prepare your supporting information.
    • Make sure the year—listed in two places on the front page of the supporting information—matches the current year, or if at the end of a year, the upcoming year, in both places.
    • Enter the full bibliographic information for your paper, as well as a summary of the supporting information contents, both on the front page of your supporting information file. If your supporting information contains the data used to create figures or charts in your manuscript—as is required by the JIE (see http://jie.click/dataaccessibility)—make sure this data is clearly identified in your summary.
    • Follow the italicized instructions provided on the front page of the supporting information template (and then be sure to remove these instructions from the file).
  • For supporting information containing multiple non-standard files (such as files containing code), use the JIE Word supporting information template to prepare a cover sheet, which can then be zipped together with the other relevant files to create a single supporting information zip file.
