Socio-Economic Metabolism

Kangkang (KK) Tong is an Associate Professor at China-UK Low Carbon College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She also serves as the Co-Chair of ISIE’s Sustainable Urban Systems section. Previously, she worked as a Post-doctoral Research Associate at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University and Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, a Master of Science in Ecology, and a Ph.D. in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy. Dr. Tong takes an interdisciplinary and systems perspective to investigate urban sustainability by focusing on urban energy use and multiple interconnected infrastructures.

Main research/work interest areas:

  • Urban carbon accounting from the multi-infrastructure perspective
  • Urban energy system's net-zero carbon transition analyses
  • Socio-environmental impact assessment of urban zero-carbon actions

Favorite cities and why:

Boston, MA, USA; Stockholm, Sweden; Edinburgh, UK. These cities are walkable with green space and clean. They have unique history. It is also convenient (not too crowded) to travel around.

Collaboration interests:

I am looking forward to potential collaborations focused on

  • Urban sustainability issues
  • Big data and machine learning used in urban net-zero carbon transitions
