How to become a member of the Student Chapter

You automatically become a member when you register as a student member of ISIE. Student members receive a discounted registration fee to ISIE conferences and can participate in events organized by the Student Chapter, such as the biennial Symposium on Industrial Ecology for Young Professionals (SIEYP). As a student member, you also get the opportunity to apply for conference scholarships which are covered by funding secured by the Student Chapter Board.

You are highly encouraged to register as both a student member and as a member of one or more of ISIE's subject sections. Find out more about becoming a member of the ISIE.

History of the ISIE Student Chapter

The "formal" ISIE Student Chapter was initiated at the Gordon Conference in June 2002, thanks to the interest of the students, and the support of many. Due to the fact that students in the field of IE are dispersed around the world, there is a need for us to have a 'home' for communication among our peers. The Student Chapter was created due to the need to form a community for ourselves, to understand how broad of a field industrial ecology is, to share knowledge and resources and collaborate with each other on papers and projects, to hold discussions on topics, and very importantly, to have a place that provides networking. In 2014 the Student Chapter was officially integrated into the ISIE, becoming formally a part of the Society.

The student chapter board

The Student Chapter is represented by the Student Chapter Board (SCB). The list of current and past board members can be found on this page.

The board is normally composed of eight to ten student volunteer members elected by the ISIE student members. The term of a board member is two years, and terms in the board are staggered: each year new board members are elected in October-November to replace retiring board members. Two continuing members of the board take on the responsibilities of President and Vice-President respectively. This ensures continuity in the Student Chapter. If you are a student member of ISIE, you can become a board member! You'll get a notice about the next elections by e-mail.

The roles of the student chapter board include:

  • Representing the student community in the ISIE council and other governing bodies.
  • Creating opportunities for networking and learning through ongoing student activities (networking events, webinars, etc.).
  • Leading the organization of student events at ISIE-related conferences:
    • Symposium on Industrial Ecology for Young Professionals (SIEYP) associated with the biennial ISIE conference;
    • Industrial Ecology Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) associated with the biennial Gordon Research Conference (GRC);
    • Section conferences.
  • Helping in finding and obtaining scholarships for ISIE’s students.
  • Compiling and publishing the students’ newsletters.
  • Helping the students exchange information regarding conferences, employment opportunities, collaborations, etc.
