Research Interests
I am a Professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada. For the past 20 years, I conduct socio-metabolic research on small islands, tracking material and energy flows through island systems: what and how much resources are locally produced, imported, transformed, used, stocked and discarded. My research aims to inform science and policy on ways small islands can achieve resource and energy security, meet social and economic goals while building resilient infrastructure to endure climate change. I have conducted extensive research in the Nicobar Islands (India), Samothraki (Greece), and in several Caribbean nations. I am the co-founder and lead of the research program "Metabolism of Islands" (https://metabolismofislands.org).
