I'm Sakiru (Shakir) Olagunju, a PhD candidate at Nazarbayev University working on material flow analysis, urban material stocks, and circular economy assessment for buildings and transboundary infrastructure. I'm defending later this year and currently looking for postdoctoral and industry data science roles in circular economy and geospatial analysis.

I'm a PhD candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Nazarbayev University in Astana, working under Ferhat Karaca and Huseyin Atakan Varol, and I also hold a Research Fellow position at ISSAI. I'm defending later this year and currently looking at postdoctoral and industry data science roles in geospatial analysis and circular economy.

My work sits between material flow analysis, remote sensing, and circular economy assessment. I surveyed around 350 Soviet-era residential buildings in Astana slated for demolition by 2030 to build out material stock estimates and recovery catchment maps, published in Waste Management. On the remote sensing side, I built a calibration-free flood vulnerability model using building heights derived from satellite imagery, applied to the 2024 Petropavlovsk flood, published in Remote Sensing. I've got papers under review at the Journal of Industrial Ecology (a four-city LiDAR validation study) and in preparation for Scientific Data (an earthwork detection dataset), plus a circular economy discourse study on Norwegian construction firms under review at the Journal of Cleaner Production.

Right now I'm extending a circular economy taxonomy I built for transboundary water governance into a quantitative circularity scoring framework for river basin infrastructure, and I'm increasingly interested in how well global material intensity coefficients hold up in regions like Central Asia where most databases currently borrow data from elsewhere rather than measuring locally.
