About
I am Jinghang Xu, a doctoral researcher at the University of Birmingham. My research focuses on developing carbon emissions databases, with an emphasis on improving their reliability and coverage.Details
I am completing my PhD in Geography at the University of Birmingham and will join the University of Hong Kong as a postdoctoral researcher. I hold an MSc in Economics from Durham University. My research has developed multilevel carbon emissions datasets for China, covering national, provincial and city levels and encompassing both energy-related and industrial process emissions. This work provides a foundation for understanding emission patterns and supporting research on low-carbon development. Publications arising from this research include “City-level CO₂ emission inventories in China 1997–2023” in Nature Sustainability (in press), “China carbon emission accounts 2020–2021” in Applied Energy (2024), and “City-level process-related CO₂ emissions in China 2000–2021” in Scientific Data (2025). The Applied Energy paper was recognised as an ESI Highly Cited Paper and Hot Paper. My research also extends to the energy and carbon footprints of artificial intelligence.
Alongside research, I have delivered training at CEADs summer schools and serve as a reviewer for international journals. I welcome opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange within the industrial ecology community.
