I am a Professor of Urban Engineering in the Department of Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and the Director of the Complex and Sustainable Urban Networks (CSUN) Laboratory.My publications include the popular science book "The Infrastructure Books: How Cities Work and Power Our Lives" (Prometheus Books, 2025) and the textbook "Urban Engineering for Sustainability" (MIT Press, 2019). I am a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). I received a US National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the Walter L. Huber Research Prize from the ASCE for “outstanding research focusing on smart, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure.” I was also a Lead Author on the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Seventh Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7).
I serve as an Associate Editor for npj Urban Sustainability (Nature), the Journal of Infrastructure Systems (ASCE), and Cleaner Production Letters (Elsevier).
