A postdoctoral research position is available for a modeling expert to develop set of tools examining the diffusion requirements and consequences for various Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV) and their implications on energy and the environment.  We seek a researcher who can make use of choice model analyses underpinned by consumer surveys and then develop and parameterize a forward-looking energy demand model based on this data.  This position requires a background in statistics and strong programming skills as well as familiarity with modeling energy-transport systems.  The successful applicant will be part of a team of researchers that employ studies in the context diffusion of innovation, energy systems, and sustainability analysis on large scale.

The position will be funded by Tel Aviv University under a grant agreement from the Israeli ministry of environmental protection in collaboration with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. The successful candidate will work closely with diverse research group led by Professor Itai Sened (Public Policy) and Dr. Vered Blass (Industrial Ecology) from Tel Aviv University and in close collaboration with Dr. Anat Tchechik (Consumer Economics, Bar Ilan University) and the Energy Program (ENE) at IIASA. As part of the project, transport consumer surveys will be conducted and analyzed; a logit-based choice model for the transport sector will be developed and parameterized; and then the transport model will be linked to the MESSAGEix energy systems model developed at IIASA. Responsibilities of the applicant include developing a quantitative forward-looking choice model and then link this model with MESSAGEix to allow analyzing mobility transitions in the context of the overall energy system.  In addition, contributing to project reports and publishing in peer-reviewed journals is expected.

Funding is available for one year with extension option for another 6 months. A Ph.D. in a discipline such as energy systems, mobility systems, ecological economics, or transport studies is required; strong quantitative and statistical analysis skills are necessary; familiarity with energy-transport models as well as demonstrated experience in working with diverse collaboration teams and publication record is important. In addition, strong programming skills are a requirement and knowledge of R or Python are a strong asset as some of the existing tools are written in these languages. The position requires spending time in Israel and trips to Austria.
