MCC’s working group on Applied Sustainability Science is looking to recruit a motivated postdoctoral researcher with a background in applied environmental or resource economic modelling. The research will analyze the political economy of a global coal phase-out.

Job duties

The successful candidate will be located at the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) in Berlin. The work involves close collaboration with the project partners - the University of Münster (Group of Prof. Andreas Löschel) and the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact
Research (Dr. Nico Bauer, energy system modelling group). Major tasks of the candidate are:

• Develop a model of the coal market with endogenous mine opening at the global as well as national level (case study countries: Germany, Australia, India, Indonesia) and analyze policies;
• Map the literature landscape and conduct a systematic review that assesses the political economy of coal phase-out options in the literature using formal methods of evidence synthesis;
• Operationally manage the project, coordinate across scientific partners, ensure the timely delivery of project outputs and organize the communication of project results.

While the candidate will be assigned to the Applied Sustainability Science group at MCC, work will be carried out in tight collaboration with the working groups “Climate and Development” as well as “Economic Growth and Human development”. We expect project outputs to be published in leading
international peer-reviewed journals and disseminated into policy and the general public using appropriate communicate channels.

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

• PhD in environmental, resource, climate change, or sustainability economics with a record in applied modelling;
• skills in at least one programming language for solving optimization problems such as GAMS, Matlab, Python, or comparable languages;
• experience with the visualization of research results;
• proficiency in English and ability to publish in renowned peer-reviewed international journals;
• experience with machine learning and scientometric methods for synthesizing large bodies of literature are an advantage but not a necessity.

Appointment terms
