Fuelium is a startup company that commercializes eco-friendly paper-based battery technologies to power portable electronic devices from sectors such as in-vitro diagnostics, veterinary, agro-food, environmental monitoring and smart packaging.

Main functions

Fuelium offers a full-time Senior Researcher Position to support the research activities in Bilbao, Bizkaia within the context of the project "Fit-to-purpose portable power source for sustainable electronic devices - RETROFIT" – reference CPP2023-010864 supported by Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Agencia Estatal de Investigación and FEDER, EU, (MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ FEDER, UE).

RETROFIT Project aims to develop small-scale portable batteries with enhanced performance and universal form factors using ecodesign strategies to meet the life cycle of the product they are powering, addressing all key stages of the value chain such as raw materials selection, manufacturing, operation and end-of-life. In this way, portable battery development will have sustainability as main priority, representing a change of paradigm with respect to current criteria based on performance and production costs.

Job Description:

We are looking for an Experienced Researcher who can support the project in sustainability assessment of batteries and electronic devices (prospective LCA, LCC, S-LCA). The researcher will be participating in specific scientific tasks, as well as diverse project management duties and collaborative work, communication and dissemination activities.

Key Responsibilities:

    To develop a life cycle sustainability assessment method (LCSA) to cover the evaluation of the circularity and criticality of raw materials of the company batteries and electronic devices.

    To review environmental policy and regulations.

    To provide feedback for ecodesign of emerging technologies.

    To support on project management, dissemination and communication.

Requisites

    PhD in Environmental Science, Industrial Ecology, Physics, Engineering or related.

    Must have 4+ years' experience in life cycle (sustainability) assessments and inventory modelling.

    Knowledge of techno-economic analysis (TEA) and the life cycle cost analysis (LCCA).

    Basic understanding of portable energy storage systems and electronic devices.

    The applicant must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as excellent written and oral command of English.

    Pro-active attitude and ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary team.
