Mapping Global Flows and Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Chemicals and Plastics

 

  1. Description of Research

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a proven track record in industrial ecology to join the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan. The position is available as a Research Associate (Postdoc) or Junior Research Associate (for candidates without a Ph.D. but with strong research skills).

 

The successful candidate will work on the project “Mapping Global Flows and Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Chemicals and Plastics,” funded by the Royal Society. The project is divided into four interlinked Work Streams: material flow analysis, demand modelling, emissions modelling, and decarbonisation pathways. These workstreams collectively aim to guide the chemical sector towards zero-emission paradigms by 2050.

 

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Takuma Watari and an international interdisciplinary team in Japan and the UK.

 

  1. Qualifications
  • D. in industrial ecology or related fields for Research Associates.
  • Master’s degree in industrial ecology or related fields for Junior Research Associates.
  • Excellent communication skills in English or Japanese.

 

  1. Selection Process

The selection process will be by means of a screening of applications followed by individual interviews. We will inform those applicants whose applications have passed the initial screening process on details of the interview.

  1. Work Conditions and Related Regulations
  • The starting salary for a Research Associate is approximately 5,000,000 JPY per year.
  • The position is initially funded until March 31, 2027, with potential extension based on project status.
  • Social security benefits will be provided.
  • The probationary period is 6 months.
  • Research Associates and Junior Research Associates are treated as Contract Employees.
