Spring IE internship (paid) in France with Sustainable Development Solutions Network

5 months full time internship, February- June in Paris (France)

The Intern will work in the SDG Index team responsible for producing the flagship “Sustainable Development Report” report under the supervision of the project manager. His/her main tasks will be to conduct research and analyses on the issue of international spillover effects and consumption-based measures and policy implications. The intern will also support the production of the spillover sections of the next Sustainable Development Report 2020. 

Tasks and responsibilities

 1) Conduct a comprehensive literature review on the spillover effects of consumption at subnational level (regions, provinces, cities) to other regions and countries

  • Review the literature on available data and policy implications of spillover effects (socio-economic, environmental) generated by the consumption of citizens at subnational level focusing primarily on OECD countries
  • Identify the pros and cons of various techniques (IO tables, LCA, MFA) used to track spillover effects at subnational level
  • Liaise with experts and relevant stakeholders when needed
  • Prepare a working paper on the issue

2) Carry out research and statistical analyses for the Environmental Impact Index (EII) project

  • Support the preparation of a peer-reviewed paper on how to measure domestic and international environmental impacts in an SDG context
  • Explore ways to expand the Data Platform on Bilateral Spillovers using Lifecycle Assessments Analysis (LCA) and sector/commodity level data
  • Conduct data and statistical work to support the production of an international EII benchmark 

3)Provide support for the launch of the 2020 Sustainable Development Report on the sections and indicators related to international spillovers

  • Provide inputs for the sections related to spillover effects
  • Contribute to the production of tables and graphs
  • Help integrate comments from stakeholders’ consultations
  • Help drafting methodological sections and conduct sensitivity tests
  • Assist in reviewing draft sections submitted by the production
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders when needed 

 

Ideal candidate

 

Academic background

Candidates should be pursuing an advanced degree in economics, statistics, industrial ecology, environmental studies, political science, or any other related fields. S/he must be enrolled in a certified degree program (or be able to obtain a Convention de stage from their university), and have the right to hold an internship in France. 

Professional background (desired, but not required) 

  • Knowledge of Multi-Regional IO tables, LCA and MFA
  • Experience working with data and statistics
  • Experience in the topic of environment and sustainable consumption

 Languages 

  • This position requires written and spoken fluency in English
  • Fluency in at least one other language would be a plus

 Other skills required 

  • Good knowledge of economics and statistics
  • Knowledge of Excel and other statistical tools for data handling
  • Knowledge of computer software for the design of graphs
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Good communication skills, diplomacy with country respondents

Internship duration 

5 months from February 2020 until June 2020.

 

Compensation information 

The internship will be compensated (gratification) at the standard minimum hourly rate, plus 50% of transportation costs.
