Beyond Efficiency: Rebound Effects through an Industrial Ecology Lens (14:00 UTC)
Time slot:
Nov 21, 2025 — 14:00-15:00
(UTC Change)
Session Organizer : Tamar Meshulam
Institution : Ben Gurion University
Location / Local Time : Beersheba, Israel / 5:00 PM
Abstract :
Efficiency improvements and circular strategies are often promoted as key pathways to sustainability. In practice, however, their expected environmental benefits are often reduced when behavioural and systemic responses lead to greater overall consumption, a phenomenon known as rebound effects.
This session brings together researchers to discuss the origins of rebound, share new insights, and explore emerging directions in rebound research. Drawing on case studies from multiple sectors, speakers will highlight how rebound analysis can be more effectively integrated into sustainability assessment and policy design.
