Sustainable Island Futures VIII (UTC 13:00)
Session Organizer : SISSTEM and the Metabolism of Islands (MoI)
Institution : University of Aruba and the Metabolism of Islands (MoI)
Location / Local Time : Aruba / 9:00 AM
Abstract :
Sustainable Island Futures (SIF)
Small island states are characterized by a strong dependency on external resources to meet their basic needs which highly contributes to the vulnerability of these territories. The approaches to increase resource security and self-reliance in small island states need to be carefully redesigned considering context-specific challenges and opportunities. At the same time, in order to achieve sustainability and build system resilience, holistic approaches need to be favored over narrow agendas. This multidisciplinary event will bring together established and emerging scholars to present new research and insights to advance our understanding of a sustainability transformation in small island states and to foster interdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaboration.
The SIF symposia is part of a series co-hosted by SISSTEM at the University of Aruba, the “Islands” section of the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE), & the Metabolism of Islands (MoI). This year the SIF team will additionally collaborate with the Universiteit Leiden’s Institute of Environmental Sciences and establish synergies with the International Industrial Ecology (IE) DAY 2025. The IE Day of the SIF will be for 90 minutes, and will continue for an additional 30 minutes (typical duration for regular SIF) independent of IE Day on the same zoom platform.
