Abstract:
Climate change is increasingly recognized as a critical threat to global food security, as changing meteorological conditions and more frequent extreme weather events disrupt agricultural production and exacerbate food price volatility. These disruptions not only reduce the availability and affordability of food but also disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. In a highly globalized world where food trade is more interconnected than ever, the localized impacts of climate change on food supply are often amplified or mitigated through international supply chains. This makes it essential to explore how global climate dynamics influence food supply at the micro and local levels and to identify strategies to build climate-resilient food systems capable of recovering from and alleviating food supply shocks.
This session will discuss how climate change impacts the agrifood system to identify the critical challenges of climate resilience and the possible solutions. We welcome case studies at different geographical scales as well as from various countries. We hope to bring the interdisciplinary investigations together to provide a more comprehensive picture on food system vulnerabilities and the cascading interregional impacts of climate shocks across regions and sectors. The session will also explore the importance of looking beyond food security to encompass nutritional security, considering food quality and nutrient intake necessary for healthy lives, an area often overlooked in current research, which tends to focus predominantly on staple crops.
