Abstract:

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) play a crucial role in the global economy, particularly in industries such as biomass production and the supply of essential metal ores, which are crucial for the global energy transition. Over the past five years, several LAC countries - including Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama and Uruguay - have initiated national strategies and roadmaps to advance circular economy (CE) initiatives, highlighting the region's proactive stance in fostering sustainable resource management.

Furthermore, LAC has been a hub of CE research, with significant contributions from the Industrial Ecology perspective. Those studies have provided valuable insights into the unique challenges and opportunities for CE research in the region. They have not only advanced our understanding of CE transition in LAC but also informed policymaking, practical implementation strategies, and identified research gaps, serving as inspiration for other Global South regions.

In this session, we aim to:

• Showcase the state-of-the-art CE research in LAC.
• Discuss and inspire the future CE agenda in the region.

By reflecting on the advancements made and considering the unique socio-economic context of LAC, this session will explore the crucial contributions the Industrial Ecology community can make to the future of CE in the region. In a discussion panel, we will delve into the role of various analytical tools and methodologies in shaping effective CE strategies and their global implications, aiming to provide researchers with actionable insights to guide the region's CE research agenda in LAC.
