The world is around the mid-point in time toward the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development yet still has a long way from achieving the SDGs. This session explores the national efforts for green, low-carbon transition ongoing in China and their connections to the SDGs. It brings together leading Chinese scholars and experts to reflect on these efforts, their impacts, as well as key opportunities and challenges from interdisciplinary perspectives.

Short Bios of Presenters and Moderator

LU Yonglong, Xiamen University

Bio: Yonglong Lu is the Chair Professor, at Xiamen University, Dean of the College of the Environment and Ecology, and Distinguished Professor of the Chinese Academy of Science. He is a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences, a foreign member of Academia Europaea, and a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Lu is the President of the Pacific Science Association and Vice President of the Ecological Society of China. His research interests include ecological impacts and risk assessment of emerging pollutants, pollution and climate change interaction, sustainable coastal ecosystems management, urban ecological planning and assessment, environmental management and emergency response, and environmental technology innovation and diffusion policies.

 

SHI Lei, Nanchang University

Bio: SHI Lei is professor and the Dean of School of Resources and Environment, the Director of Watershed Carbon Neutrality Institute at Nanchang University. He received his PhD degree in Process Systems Engineering from Dalian University of Technology in China. His research interests include industrial ecosystem complexity, industrial metabolism and watershed carbon neutrality. He has led more than 50 projects on eco-industrial parks, circular economy and carbon neutrality, including the first EIP project and circular economy project in China. He chaired the 10th International Conference on Industrial Ecology (ISIE2019, Beijing). 

 

XU Ming, Tsinghua University

Bio: Ming Xu is a Professor in School of Environment at Tsinghua University. Prior to that, he was a professor in the School for Environment and Sustainability and a professor in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prof. Xu's research interests lie in the fields of sustainable engineering and industrial ecology. He was awarded the prestigious Robert A. Laudise Medal which is to recognize "outstanding achievement in industrial ecology by a researcher under the age of 36." He is the Editor-In-Chief of Resources, Conservation & Recycling.

 

ZHANG Jianyu, BRI Green Development Institute

Bio: ZHANG, Jianyu is an inaugural founding member and executive president of the newly-founded BRI Green Development Institute, and the international liaison person for the BRI International Green Development Coalition. Zhang found the China program of Environmental Defense Fund. He also helped found and manage the first professional Joint Venture environmental consulting firm in 1992. He served as China program advisor for the Air and Waste Management Association, a Fellow of the prestigious Aspen China Fellowship program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. Zhang is also an executive board director of China Association for International NGO Cooperation. Zhang is known for his leadership and contribution to the establishment of China’s Carbon Trading System.

 

ZHU Junming, Tsinghua University

Bio: Junming Zhu is an Associate Professor at the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University, and an Associate Director at Tsinghua’s Institute for Sustainable Development Goals. His research focuses on policy analysis and governance concerning the environment and development. He is the President of the Chinese Society for Industrial Ecology and a co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Industrial Ecology.
