This session explores the capacity of the Japanese economy to transition to a low-carbon and circular economy based on the success of early implementation of the 3R principles as a high level policy framework and significant efforts of Japanese industry and businesses to reduce carbon emissions and the manage waste and recover resources to the extend possible. It brings together leading Japanese industrial ecologists to think about the key opportunities and challenges for the public and private sector, as well as for communities and explores scientific insights that can inform the transition. It presents environmental systems analysis as an interdisciplinary approach that takes into consideration the complexity of the issues environment and sustainability policy needs to deal with.
