Recording of the Asia-Pacific Plenary: the Green Recovery from COVID 19

Central Question: How can Industrial Ecology inform new thinking and guide the government programs or corporate investment in the recovery phase of the global pandemic?

The COVID 19 pandemic has seen unprecedented impacts on human health, wellbeing, and on the global economy. The prospects for recovery are highly varied, and dependent on access to vaccines, and linked to stimulus from government. As the World emerges from the pandemic, we have re-evaluated our cities, our travel, the way we work and do business, and we have experienced the acute analogue to the chronic transformation needed to become zero-carbon.

This plenary session considers the large planned expenditure on the recovery phase, sometimes in the form of infrastructure and major projects, and asks: why not build more eco-industrial parks; should we think differently distribution of living and work places; why not invest in renewable energy, circular economy initiatives, and sustainable transport? How can we build industrial ecology into the economic recovery plan for COVID 19, seeking and using this rare opportunity for a sustainable transformation at this time of unprecedented change?
