A web-application for collaborative circular economy scenario analysis using hybrid mrEEIO tables

Accessibility of ecological data is of fundamental importance to advise policy makers and public debate. Recent developments in data science have allowed the proliferation of web-applications for easy access and fruition of curated databases. Such developments can also be seen in the context of sustainability science where - among others - a number of footprint calculators are now publicly available for use. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of these applications allows for the analysis of current and counterfactual physical flows among agents (i.e. industry and consumers) together with their environmental impacts, material stocks and circularity. Circular economy and sustainability counterfactual scenarios rely on complex sets of heterogeneous input data concealed behind industry and scientific experts, or dispersed across scientific and grey literature. This dispersion leads to challenges in FAIRness of input data and represents a barrier for reproducibility and comparability of studies. To overcome these challenges, we present an open-source web-application for circular economy and sustainability collaborative scenarios creation and analysis using EXIOBASE hybrid multi-regional environmentally extended Input-Output tables. The objective is to provide a central point for macro-level circular economy scenario analysis, which would be supported by progressively improved and FAIR scenario settings.
