From Decommissioning to Design: Circular Economy for Energy Systems. (SETAC Europe Bruges 19-21 October 2026)

Dear IS4IE Community,

We invite you to submit an abstract to a thematic session that has been selected for inclusion in the Call for Abstracts of the SETAC Europe 27th LCA Case Study Symposium, which will take place on 19–21 October 2026 in Bruges, Belgium.

Session title: From Decommissioning to Design: Integrating Circular Economy into LCA of Energy Systems

Track: Policy Integration and Decision Support through Life Cycle Approaches

This session considers how end-of-life energy infrastructure (both materials and sites) can be integrated into future energy system design, and analysed using approaches including grave-to-gate LCA. It explores how economic frameworks, policy mechanisms, and planning practices could better enable the reuse, repurposing, or recycling of materials from decommissioned assets, and whether such approaches meaningfully reduce environmental impacts at the system level.

We welcome contributions that offer diverse perspectives. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • The potential for material and/or site reuse to reduce environmental impacts
  • Interactions between economic, policy, and regulatory frameworks and material efficiency
  • Relationships between decommissioning/redevelopment decisions and local communities
  • Tools, analytical approaches, and visual methods for effectively communicating material flows, environmental impacts, and associated trade-offs

Abstract submission deadline: 29 April 2026: All abstracts must be submitted through the official SETAC Europe abstract submission system and linked to the session title above.

If you have any interest in these topics we would welcome your contribution to this session and/or please get in touch!  (j.hawkin@sheffield.ac.uk)

With kind regards,

Jennifer Hawkin, Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Sheffield (Session Co-chair) j.hawkin@sheffield.ac.uk

Please note that submission of an abstract does not guarantee acceptance, and the final programming of the session will depend on the number and quality of abstracts received.
