JIE Call for Papers: Special issue on Advancing Life Cycle Assessment Through Artificial Intelligence

Public Policy

The Journal of Industrial Ecology announces a call for papers for a special issue, Advancing Life Cycle Assessment Through Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) presents important opportunities and challenges for the life cycle assessment (LCA) community. Recent studies have shown how LCA can benefit in many ways from AI methods such as machine learning (ML).

However, there are important challenges in both implementation and trustworthiness of these systems due to, among others: data scarcity, poor interpretability (“explainable AI”), unclear factuality and relevance of generative AI outputs, challenges in uncertainty assessment, or mere unintended environmental consequences of these applications.

The goal of this special issue is to collect methodological contributions and case studies that lay the foundation for widespread, robust adoption of AI for LCA practice.

Submission deadline: February 1, 2026. More information about the special issue can be found at https://bit.ly/JIE-LCA-AI . Please note that the JIE is now published by Springer Nature.  The JIE homepage is https://bit.ly/JIESpringer and papers should be submitted through Springer’s SNAPP platform: https://bit.ly/JIE-SNAPP
