Call for session proposals to all ISIE members – Industrial Ecology Day June 21, 2021

Dear members of the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE),

On June 21 of this year, the ISIE will organize the Industrial Ecology Day, a global 24 h online event on industrial ecology research. This event shall help industrial ecology researchers to reconnect with the global scholarly community, to learn about the latest developments in the field, and to engage with each other in times of the pandemic.

The planning of the event has just started. Anna Petit-Boix and Stefan Pauliuk (both from Uni Freiburg, Germany) will be co-chairing the event and will assemble a core team of regional and sectional chairs and additional support.

Here are the latest updates:

  1. SCHEDULE

The Industrial Ecology Day will feature a number of sessions, structured into 2 hr time windows (session duration: 1:30-1:45, plus break) across all continents. Plenary, topical, regional, networking and socializing sessions will be hosted by volunteers from our membership and the ISIE topical sections.

The sessions will start as follows:

Sydney (UTC+10): 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm | Tokyo (UTC+9): 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm

Beijing (UTC+8): 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm | Berlin/Cape Town (UTC+2): 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm

London (UTC+1): 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm | Rio (UTC-3): 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm

New York (UTC-4): 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm | Bogotà (UTC-5): 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm

San Francisco (UTC-7): 10am, 12pm, 2pm. (see also figure below)

For each time slot, there will be at least one session (in which case the 3pm Sydney time session would be identical to the 1pm Beijing time session), resulting in at least 12 sessions running from 9am in Sydney to 4pm in San Francisco on June 21. If there are enough session proposals, parallel sessions will be arranged for selected time slots.

For example, the following sessions were already proposed: “Industrial Ecology Research in Support of Policy Making”, “Industrial Symbiosis”, “Industrial Ecology of Islands”, or “Keynote presentations: Industrial ecology and the circular economy”.

  1. CALL FOR SESSION PROPOSALS

We would like to reach out to you to solicit session proposals, ideally together with the commitment to host such a session if it is (very likely!) accepted.

Please send your session proposal simply per email to industrialecologyday@is4ie.org  by Feb. 25 and indicate if you are willing to organize and host this session!

Session proposals must include:

  • Title (descriptive but not too long)
  • Goal (ca. 1 sentence, to be used in the conference program)
  • Scope (topical and/or regional scope, ca. 1 sentence, to be used in the conference program)
  • Format (this very flexible and all ideas are welcome, e.g., 5 presentations 12+3 minutes plus plenary discussion, 3 keynote presentations followed by a common discussion, or an interactive workshop, …)
  • 2-3 preferred time slots (use UTC times, it’s a global event!)
  • Organization (will you need a call for abstracts? Will speakers by invited?)
  • Additional relevant information (do you need more than one 2-hr-slot? Are you coordinating with another regional/topical host? Will you require special technical support?)

Please keep in mind that this is a non-stop event and breaks will be needed. We ask session hosts to plan for 1:45h sessions to provide some breaks in between the sessions.

If you are willing to also organize the session you are proposing (you don’t have to but it’s much appreciated!), please indicate so, or propose a colleague who you’d recommend for this role. Organizers are expected to decide on/refine the session format, develop the session schedule and line-up (find/invite speakers, collect presentation titles, short synopsis, and speaker details), communicate the relevant details to the steering committee, and to find a (or act as) a chair during the event.

  1. DIGITAL PLATFORM

The online platform for the Industrial Ecology Day has not been decided yet. This will be done later, once we know how many sessions there will be and what requirements the organizers have. The baseline option is to have a number of Zoom or similar meetings, hosted by colleagues with an institutional account. Other options are being investigated - suggestions are welcome! If you have any particular requirements, please let us know as soon as possible. Access to all sessions will be made available through the existing ISIE webpage. The ISIE is also investigating to use the ISIE website for submitting abstracts for the different sessions.

  1. FEES

The Industrial Ecology Day will be free of charge to all ISIE members. Non-members can participate in the event by subscribing for an ISIE membership.

We hope that you are as excited about this event as we are. Looking forward to making this important community event a big success!

With best regards,

Industrial Ecology Day 2021 steering committee
