A must-see for all ISIE members: Industrial Ecology Data Commons (IEDC) with new data and expanded user interface

Socio-Economic Metabolism

Over the last months, the Industrial Ecology Data Commons (IEDC) has grown substantially in scope. More than 3.2 million individual data points from around 250 journal publications, grouped in 320 datasets, are now available for direct download. At the same time, the IEDC team has developed several new search and filtering functions, so that we can now offer a professional user interface.

We invite all colleagues to have a look at the new IEDC and explore the data treasures of our community!

Background: The Industrial Ecology Data Commons (IEDC) is an entirely new type of database that contains more than 300 datasets for industrial ecology and socio-metabolic research, including stocks, flows, process inventories, process yield factors, material composition and lifetimes of products, and many more. The goals of the IEDC are to provide easy access to socio-metabolic, industrial ecology, and circular economy data to researchers and consultants and to provide researchers with an infrastructure that facilitates systematic data formatting and labelling. Data are extracted from a variety of sources, formatted into the IEDC data model, matched to the IEDC classifications, and uploaded.

The IEDC welcomes data submissions from the community! Users can validate their own data against the IEDC data model and classifications and submit their validated datasets for upload. For 2025, we have launched a Critical Mass Sprint for data collection, see here for details:
