ISIE and JIE Awards 2024 – Celebrating Excellence in Industrial Ecology

We are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 ISIE and JIE Awards, recognizing outstanding achievements and impactful contributions in the field of industrial ecology. Congratulations to all awardees!

🔹 The Society Prize
The ISIE’s highest recognition of professional achievement was awarded to Gregory Keoleian for his immense influence on the development and growth of the industrial ecology field and the ISIE through his research, education, and engagement - particularly in the early stages of the Society - and to Heinz Schandl for his exceptional contributions to industrial ecology, spanning scientific innovation, policy influence, and dedicated service to the ISIE community, especially his leadership in guiding the Society’s transition to an independent organization.

🔹 The Laudise Medal
Awarded for outstanding achievements by a young researcher, the 2024 Laudise Medal was presented to Zhi Cao for his exemplary work in socioeconomic metabolism, which has significantly advanced our understanding of sustainable transitions in material and energy systems, as well as for his active contributions to the ISIE through dedicated service and leadership.

🔹 The Bob Ayres Prize
The very first Bob Ayres Prize for impactful research published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology (JIE) was awarded to the authors of the article “Comparative Environmental Life Cycle Assessment of Conventional and Electric Vehicles”: Troy R. Hawkins, Bhawna Singh, Guillaume Majeau-Bettez, and Anders Hammer Strømman.

🔹 Senior Graedel Prize 2024
Awarded for the best paper by a senior author published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology (JIE), the prize was awarded to Tianyu Zhang for the article: “Material flow and supply–demand feature of thulium in China”.

🔹 Junior Graedel Prize 2024
Awarded for the best paper by a junior author published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology (JIE), the prize was awarded to Raphael Ginster for the article: “Circular battery production in the EU: Insights from integrating life cycle assessment into system dynamics modeling on recycled content and environmental impacts”.
Co-authors: Steffen Blömeke, Jan-Linus Popien, Christian Scheller, Felipe Cerdas, Christoph Herrmann, and Thomas S. Spengler.
