China Scholarship Council – Newcastle University PhD Scholarships (2025 entry)

Award Summary

Full tuition fees of successful applicants will be funded by the University for a period of 48 months. The China Scholarship Council will provide a living allowance, including the cost of a return flight from China to the UK, accommodation and subsistence, depending on the applicant’s eligibility.

Overview

This scheme provides academically excellent Chinese students with the opportunity to study for a PhD at Newcastle University. The scholarships are supported jointly by the China Scholarship Council and Newcastle University.

The awards are available for 2025 entry.

Award Duration

The scholarships are valid for a period of 48 months.

Only applicants who state in the Funding section of their PhD application that they wished to be considered for China Scholarships Council – Newcastle University PhD Scholarships will be considered for awards. The University will consider applicants based on their PhD application; there is no separate scholarship application form to complete.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to be considered for these awards applicants:

a.     must be Chinese citizens at the time of application and intend to return to China upon completion of their studies at Newcastle University

b.     must have an unconditional offer from the University in one of the following areas: Humanities and Social Sciences, Science, Agriculture and Engineering, Medical and Life Sciences. Applicants with conditional offers will be considered if they fulfilled the academic and English language requirements of their programme offer.

c.     must have the equivalent of a Merit or above in a UK Master’s degree from a prestigious university.

d.     must meet the relevant academic requirements as well as the English language proficiency requirements for entry into a PhD programme set out by the University by the 31st January 2025.

e.     should not be currently working outside China at the time of application, and successful candidates must agree to return to China upon completion of their research degree at Newcastle University. Candidates currently studying outside China are eligible to apply, but not those who have already commenced a PhD programme of study prior to the 2025-26 academic year.

Additionally, applicants must be applying for a course of study based at the University’s Newcastle Campus; courses based in Malaysia or Singapore are not eligible for this award. Please see the scholarship Terms and Conditions (PDF: 47KB) for the full eligibility criteria.

Successful candidates will be required to apply to the China Scholarship Council (CSC), satisfy the selection criteria set out by CSC (details can be found on the China Scholarship Council's website) and must inform Newcastle University of the progress of their CSC application and interview date.
