Seeking speakers for training webinars on post-disaster data collection methods

Sustainable Urban Systems

Dear ISIE Community,

SUMMEER (SUstainable Material Management Extreme Events Reconnaissance) is seeking speakers for training webinars on data collection methods that can be used by interdisciplinary researchers during field and virtual assessments to systematically and consistently address critical data needs for sustainable management of post-disaster materials.

The SUMMEER organization (summeer.org) is one of the NSF-sponsored Extreme Events Reconnaissance (EER) organizations. SUMMEER was established in 2020 and has been supported by the NSF Environmental Sustainability program (CBET- 2014330). Similar to other EERs, SUMMEER has a mission of contributing to natural hazards research through training and reconnaissance, specifically with a focus on sustainable materials management. SUMMEER investigates the sustainable management of post-disaster materials by conducting virtual and/or field assessments of extreme disaster events. During virtual assessments, multifaceted non-perishable data (e.g., severity and characteristics of the disaster, pre-disaster planning guidelines, debris management governing policies and regulations, the status of debris operations, debris characteristics, etc.) are collected and analyzed. Meanwhile, during field assessments, perishable data (e.g., debris source locations, areal extent, moisture and organics content, potential contamination, etc.) are captured in a timely manner and investigated accordingly.

Selected applicants will be asked to provide presentations at upcoming SUMMEER training webinars (i.e., tentatively scheduled in September, October, and November of 2022) and will be awarded $600 as compensation. Further, they will also be invited as attendees (and possible presenters) to the second national workshop of SUMMEER entitled “Disaster Reconnaissance for Sustainable Post-Disaster Materials Management” that will be held at California Polytechnic State University September 15-16, 2022 (partial travel support will be provided).

For those who are interested in this opportunity, please complete the application form (https://forms.gle/PB6tmah73gzdcwq76) by 12 PM, July 25 (EDT).

If you are interested in becoming a SUMMEER member, please join us here.
