Job Description

The postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in production-consumption systems with a specific focus on material flows from rural regions to urban regions. The candidate will work on a new project under the direct supervision of Dr. Jay S. Golden, a professor in the Department of Engineering and the Vice Chancellor of Research, Economic Development and Engagement.

The research falls under Dr. Golden’s leading work on Sustainable Systems Analysis and will initially focus on the unique role that Eastern North Carolina provides in supplying a variety of earth resources to urban regions across the country.  The work will expand to examine similar production-consumption systems domestically and globally.  This will include examining the environmental and socio-economic implications.  The project will also seek to develop an industrial symbiosis / circular economy project in Eastern North Carolina with public and private partners.

Responsibilities include management of all aspects of engaging in original scientific research using empirical data acquisition, material flow analysis, and life cycle assessment modeling. Duties include: hypothesis development, literature review, data collection, report writing, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics, development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications, and training and supervising of undergraduate and graduate research students, including overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, and supervision of data entry/data analysis..

Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 85% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to research.
Approximately 15% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students working with Dr. Golden.  

Minimum Qualifications 
English Proficiency
Excellent written and oral communication skills
PhD in related field.
The successful candidate should be able to manage multiple detail-oriented tasks with minimal supervision, be capable of trouble-shooting and critical thinking, and be self-motivated, dedicated and creative. 

Preferred Education and Experience 
PhD in environmental engineering, environmental sciences or similar field
