Berkeley Lab’s Biological Systems and Engineering Division (http://biosciences.lbl.gov/divisions/bse/) has an opening for a Life-cycle Assessment and Technoeconomic Analysis Postdoctoral Scholar. You will participate in research in the Life-Cycle Economics and Agronomy Division (LEAD) at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) focused on geospatial modeling of feedstock availability, biomass transportation logistics, and the impacts of disruptions (e.g. drought, pests) on biomass supply for bioenergy. You will work with the Feedstocks Division to understand how engineered traits in sorghum and switchgrass could alter the susceptibility of these feedstocks to drought, pests, and other environmental factors. This role will generate data for life-cycle assessments, and participate in life-cycle assessment and technoeconomic analysis modeling.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Develop geospatial modeling techniques in R or Python to simulate biomass production under different land conversion and climate scenarios.
  • Collect and review data on the responses of biomass feedstocks to environmental stressors, including drought and pests.
  • Conduct uncertainty/sensitivity analyses to quantify the impacts of uncertain parameters on biomass supply.
  • Participate in the construction of LCA models, and update with improved data.
  • Participate in the construction of technoeconomic analysis models and update with improved data.
  • Prepare internal tools/datasets for JBEI Feedstocks Division researchers to understand the system-wide impact of their work.
  • Prepare journal papers based on research findings.
  • Present work to the JBEI community, and at external conferences, meetings, and workshops.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Participate in JBEI events, including division retreats and JBEI annual meetings.
  • Review papers for journals.
  • Review proposals for funding agencies.
  • Serve on committees.

 

What Is Required:

  • PhD in a field that emphasizes environmental science and analytical techniques.
  • Strong analysis skills that are based on a knowledge of statistics, computer science, and sensitivity analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills required to work as part of a team and prepare compelling journal publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver presentations and to present research results at meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in scientific programming, visualization tools and statistical methodologies, and ability to program in R or Python.
  • Ability to work successfully in an interdisciplinary environment and to collaborate successfully with others.
  • Ability to interface with chemicals engineers and integrate technoeconomic analysis into geospatial modeling efforts.

 

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to participate in outreach and conduct guest lectures to a wide variety of audiences.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
