Expert in LCA and chemical risks

About the role

As an Expert at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, you will be part of a group where chemical risks are in focus. We evaluate products and processes with regard to environmental performance and potential health effects. For example, in the form of chemical footprints, i.e. ecotoxicological and toxicological indicators used in life cycle assessment (LCA). We use existing methods for ecotoxicity and toxicity risk assessment and life cycle impact assessment, but we also develop new ones. At IVL, we work partly in research projects, financed via grants, partly in assignments for businesses and authorities. We are looking for an experienced expert to strengthen the team working with chemical risks who can contribute in developing our business with a supply chain focus - is that you?

For us at IVL, systems thinking and life cycle thinking are cornerstones and we see an increasing need to incorporate ecotoxicity and toxicity assessments into LCA and other methods that relies on life cycle thinking. Safe and Sustainable-by-Design and green chemistry are examples of important work areas for IVL where this systems thinking is key. To meet this need, we now need to expand the Sustainable business and consumption unit with a new expert.

The role will contribute to the progress in the various customer and research projects by teamwork with other colleagues with high expertise as well as project managers and communication officers. You will have customer contact, collaborate in internal and external projects and contribute to the development of the work area. You will also work proactively with sales and grant applications.

Your duties include, among other things:
• Environmental and health assessments, including for example all steps in an LCA, setting up the goal and scope, inventory and impact assessment modelling, and/or hazard and risk assessment according to different guidelines, in projects where chemicals are in focus. This work can also include contributions to the development of new methods.
• Searches in databases, running in silico prediction models and collaboration with research partners or customers to generate and/or compile and synthesise relevant data.
• Monitoring of legislation and method development for example in the areas of health and environmental effects for chemical products, chemicals in goods, work environment linked to exposure to chemicals, LCA and chemical alternative assessment
• Participate as an expert and to some extent project manager in various projects within and outside IVL

We are looking for you with at least 3 years of professional experience, and documented knowledge in both LCA and chemical risk and/or hazard assessment. We believe you have at least a master's degree in chemical engineering, industrial ecology, environmental science, chemistry or other relevant higher education.

It is advantageous if you have experience in performing LCA with impact assessment that includes toxicity/chemical footprint, as well as experience in using software and databases relevant to LCA. Furthermore, it is advantageous to have knowledge in chemical risk assessment, relevant legislation for the chemical area, e.g. REACH and CLP, and toxicology/ecotoxicology.

Who are you?
