Postdoctoral researcher in the inclusive circular economy

This postdoctoral research position is part of the Erasmus Initiative "Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity" (DoIP) connecting members of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) with Erasmus School of Law and Erasmus School of Philosophy to channel their expertise into ambitious multi-disciplinary research projects. The postdoc project is part of a large Sino-Dutch research programme on inclusive waste management funded by the Dutch and Chinese research foundations (NWO and NSFC) in which Erasmus University Rotterdam is a partner, along with Delft University of Technology, Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving, Peking University, Tongji University, and City University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen Research Institute (CityU-SRI). The postdoc will be based at RSM in Rotterdam and the successful candidate will work closely with other DoIP staff and fellow researchers at TU Delft where they will spend time in the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences with members of the Inclusive Wise Waste Cities team.

Your main tasks
The role has a specific focus on the dynamic analysis and modelling of area-based waste handling chains in real-life projects in the Netherlands and China. DoIP's specific focus is on scientific as well as societal impact, so academic output and relevance to real-world problem-solving are both highly valued. 80 percent of the role is to be devoted to research that contributes to the "Inclusive Circular Economy" research theme, and 20 percent is to be devoted to sharing knowledge and creating impact on sustainable business.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you'll be expected to:

  • collaborate closely with the core faculty of the Erasmus Initiative, as well as researchers in RSM's department of Business and Society Management
  • conduct original interdisciplinary research at the intersection of circular economy, waste management, business models, life cycle analysis, and dynamic modelling; co-author scientific articles to be published in leading journals; and contribute to improving the performance of waste management systems in the Netherlands and China
  • disseminate the research at, and participate in international academic conferences about industrial ecology, business, policy analysis, and other closely connected fields
  • co-organise events and disseminate the research in the public domain
  • contribute to teaching courses in the field of business and society management, specifically related to issues of sustainability.

The successful candidate has:
  • a PhD in business, industrial ecology, systems analysis, policy analysis or other discipline relevant to the topic
  • a developing publication record with proven excellence in the above fields
  • expertise in the circular economy, life cycle analysis, waste management, business models and system dynamics or other dynamic modelling techniques
  • willingness to engage with industrial ecology, business management, and systems modelling at a high level of detail
  • ability and willingness to play a leading role in an interdisciplinary research team and the dissemination of research in interdisciplinary and public contexts
  • ability and willingness to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching
  • an entrepreneurial attitude, outstanding social skills, and the ability to work in cross-international teams.
