Postdoctoral Research Associate in Agroforestry systems

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join an exciting research project focusing on the assessment of ecosystem services within current and future agroforestry systems. You will be involved in a broad, interdisciplinary research project, through direct measurement of ecosystem service(s), the development and application of economic valuation methods, and through the adaptation and application of existing models such as FarmSAFE, YieldSAFE and the SustainFARM Public Goods tool.

This is a unique opportunity to work within an experienced and impactful team involving those already promoting innovations in supply chains, in-order to delineate and evaluate credible, relevant, and timely approaches for the development of land-use in Europe.

You must have

  • A PhD in a discipline related to the project, or equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interact with researchers, policymakers, industrial partners, and stakeholders
  • Proven experience in some of the following methods: environmental economics; primary data collection for ecosystem service evaluation; statistical analysis; focus group design and implementation; participatory research
  • Previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations

Across this exciting portfolio of activities, the postholder will contribute to both quantitative and qualitative data curation and analyses, prepare findings for publications or other outputs, assist with future grant applications, as well as liaise with participants and organisations across the agri-food sector in Europe.

In addition, the postholder will contribute to teaching activities within the BSc Agricultural Business Management, BSc Agriculture and BSc Food Business Marketing and Economics and Masters level courses in Agricultural Economics and Food Economics and Marketing.  There will also be opportunities to contribute to public engagement activities, such as on-farm demonstrations for industry visitors.

This post is particularly suited for researchers who have a strong career ambition to develop a profile in applied food systems research. We are particularly seeking to recruit an individual who shares our values of integrating farmers supply chain actors, NGOs, policymakers, and citizens within the research process to target-real life needs, problems, and opportunities.

Informal discussions are welcome; please contact Principal Investigator Dr Laurence Smith (l.g.smith@reading.ac.uk).
