Two Postdoctoral Positions at MIT Concrete sustainability Hub - Pavement LCA and Concrete Decarbonization

Concrete is the world's most consumed material after water. Ensuring that it will continue to meet sustainable development targets will require the world's brightest minds. The researchers of CSHub are at the center of that global push.

We offer an exciting, diverse, and interdisciplinary research environment that offers plentiful opportunities for not only scientific advancement but also for real-world implementation of research through industry initiatives.

Those passionate about studying the built environment—and making it more sustainable through their research—will find themselves at home at CSHub. We invite you to peruse our open positions and apply.

 Open positions:

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATEPavement Life Cycle Assessment

Responsibilities include conducting research, create tools, develop educational materials, and participate in implementation projects on life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle cost analysis (LCCA), and asset management of pavements and pavement networks. One research topic will focus on developing streamlined LCA and LCCA methodologies that can be used to support pavement design, with an emphasis on incorporating uncertainty into the methods. Another topic will revolve around the development of efficient methods to capture characteristics of urban areas using GIS data to quantify the impacts of pavement reflectivity on the urban heat island effect and global warming potential. Other activities will include developing software tools, case studies, and educational materials for practitioners who would use these approaches to support design, maintenance, and asset management decisions. This will partially be accomplished through implementation projects with practitioners.  Will collaborate and interact with CSHub faculty, research staff, postdoctoral associates, graduate students, and research sponsors and implementation partners. Travel to visit research and implementation partners (approximately five trips per year) and present research at conferences will also be required.

Job Requirements
REQUIRED:  a Ph.D., preferably in an engineering or scientific discipline. Expertise in life cycle assessment, life cycle cost analysis, statistics, data science, and pavement engineering is particularly desired. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate research results in the form of juried research journal articles and oral presentations is a must. Experience working with pavement engineers and creating probabilistic software tools is also desirable.  Job #19651

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Concrete Decarbonization

Responsibilities include conducting research, create tools, develop educational materials, and participate in implementation projects on decarbonization pathways and circular economy opportunities for cement and concrete. The research will focus on evaluating the feasibility and quantifying the potential of different strategies to lower the carbon footprint of cement and concrete in buildings and infrastructure.  In addition, opportunities to make use of different waste materials in cement and concrete based on regional supply and demand will be assessed as part of circular economy targets. Other activities will include developing software tools, case studies, and educational materials for practitioners who would use the outcomes of the work.
