Statement of the Job:
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maine (UMaine) invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in transportation engineering. The desired areas of expertise may include but are not limited to rural transportation systems, rural mobility, pedestrian and bicycle safety in rural areas, multimodal rural transportation systems, smart transportation systems, network modeling, public transportation, transportation mobility, transportation-related artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity.
Candidates with expertise in green pavement materials, and new materials to enhance pavement durability in cold climates are also encouraged to apply. The CIE program is especially interested in applicants whose focus includes equity and sustainability considerations in transportation engineering, particularly improving access and mobility options for rural transportation networks.
This position is a joint appointment between the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and one of UMaine’s four research centers/initiatives:
- Transportation Infrastructure Durability Center (https://www.tidc-utc.org/), under the aegis of the Advanced Structures and Composites Center (https://composites.umaine.edu/),
- Advanced Research Computing, Security, and Information Management (ARCSIM)(https://umaine.edu/arcsim/),
- UMaine Artificial Intelligence Initiative (https://ai.umaine.edu/), and
- Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center (https://mcspolicycenter.umaine.edu/).
Candidates will engage in instruction of fundamental and applied transportation engineering courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and enhance the Department’s existing curriculum; establish and maintain a nationally competitive, externally funded research program; author high-quality peer-reviewed publications; train M.S. and Ph.D. students; and actively engage in service to the profession, university, and state. This position is 50% teaching and 50% research. The successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to obtain licensure as a professional engineer (PE) before promotion to associate professor.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is part of the Maine College of Engineering and Computing (MCEC), which is a statewide, integrated solution to bring together the natural synergies of all engineering disciplines with computing and provide the technical workforce and innovations that are critical to moving our economy forward. Qualifications:
Required:
- Applicants must hold B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline specializing in transportation engineering by the hire date.
- Experience with transportation engineering research and a record of publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred:
- The successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to obtain licensure as a professional engineer (PE) before promotion to associate professor.
